Volunteer

District Representative Volunteers Needed

Laptops for the Wounded is currently looking for District Representative Volunteers in Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and California.  This position entails IT Level III skills or higher as well as the following skill sets:

  • Information Technology Support, Helpdesk and/or Refurbrisher Background/Experience
  • Refrain from politicizing your role at Laptops for the Wounded during press interviews or corresponding via phone or E-mail.  There are no republicans, democrats or liberals as it pertains to the organization, only wounded troops who need our help.  This is paramount to being a volunteer representing Laptops for the Wounded.  "Biting your tongue" is part of the responsibility.
  • Respect the privacy and HIPPA concerns of any troops that you are fortunate enough to meet.
  • Contact any military or VA hospitals in your area that have troops recovering from combat wounds, who Laptops for the Wounded currently do not cover, to see if they could use our aid with the troops
  • Take in any laptops donated to your district of responsibilities
  • Inspect donated laptops for minimum requirements
  • Putting all laptops into established inventory system and classify laptop condition accordingly
  • Rebuild any donated laptops that meet the required minimum specs to a standardized hardware/software standard
  • Follow established rebuilding process with donated laptops
  • Troubleshoot any hardware/software issues that may arise during rebuild
  • Make a cost versus benefit analysis when troubleshooting hardware issues and categorize priority of rebuild when occurs.  A new motherboard costs $500, but the laptops is only worth $200, then use for parts.  A laptop is worth $500, a new DVD unit cost $200 to replace the broken one, put the laptop on the back shelve to rebuild when extra funds are available.  Rebuild the laptops that needs a simple memory upgrade and/or new HDD as those are the most cost effective laptops to be rebuilt first
  • Deliver laptops to the military or VA hospitals in your region of responsibility
  • Ensure donated laptops work 100% at time of delivery to the hospitals and are able to connect to the military hospitals wireless network or CAT5 Lan
  • Support military hospitals in your area of responsibility with any IT issues relating to laptop hardware/software issues
  • Direct any hardware needs to Phil or Kathy Drouin so the part(s) can be ordered and shipped to the district representative.
  • Train/instruct military staffs and wounded troops how to rebuild, update, troubleshoot and maintain donated laptops using training material developed by Laptops for the Wounded
  • Mentoring lower skill level IT Volunteers and those wounded troops who would like to learn an IT skill
  • Ability and desire to talk to the press when required in a professional, respectful manner
  • Dedication to the voluntary role and the cause of our organizations mission.
  • Ability to help the future of Laptops for the Wounded by conducting any fundraising that you feel you can do.  We can have 500 donated laptops, but without any money to rebuild them, they are simple paperweights.

If you would like to inquire about becoming an IT volunteer, please send a resume and references to Phil Drouin via the E-Mail address in the Contact Tab.  All volunteer positions are “non-compensated” positions.  The compensation is supporting and aiding the wounded troops who keep America and her citizens free and safe.
